As Thyself

Matthew 19:19: Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Quantitatively, we may not be able to love our neighbors as ourselves, because there may not be as much opportunity to love them, but the quality of our love for them ought to be equal to or greater than our love for ourselves. What do I do for myself that I do not do for others? How about you? Do I try to learn what I need? Then I should try to learn what my neighbor needs. Do I try to see to it that my needs are met? Then I should try to see to it that my neighbor*s needs are met. Do I go out of my way to meet my own needs? Then I should also go out of my way to meet my neighbor*s needs. I cannot learn what my neighbor needs if I do not get to know him. We should not just mind our own business. We must mind our neighbor*s business if we are to find out what he needs and meet that need. If he has needs we cannot supply we can ask the Lord to meet them.

Philippians 2:3: Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

1 Corinthians 10:24: Let no man seek his own, but every man another*s wealth.

This passage does not promote covetousness. It means we should want the other guy to be wealthy, not just ourselves. And, by the way, true riches is the salvation of our souls.

Since God has promised to meet all of our needs, we have no excuse for selfishness.

Philippians 4:19: But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

His promise to meet our needs is not an excuse for laziness either.

Deuteronomy 8:18: But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

Ephesians 4:28: Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

Proverbs 3:28: Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
